ABBYY has a long history in the optical character recognition field and that shows in ABBYY Business Card Reader. The app has excellent text recognition and is one of the easiest of apps in this category to navigate.
ABBYY BCR allows you to save an image of the back of the card and you can add a picture of the card’s owner, too. Adding a card is easy: the app detects card edges and snaps the picture automatically.
My only major complaint for this app is the four-tabbed detail view. Seeing all the information for a contact can take several taps. Other areas of the app could be tightened up, as well.
Some items Id like to see:
- Send vCards by text message, in addition to the existing email message
- Format email messages to look nicer (admittedly a minor issue)
- Tap to text, in addition to the existing tap to call
- Move the view of the back of the card to the same tab as the front
- Make "Placement" a setting to enable/disable (and rename it) and allow the user to correct and/or name the location (with the name of the event)
- Include the creation date—that, along with the location the card was scanned, gives some indication of the event
All in all, though, this is a great app that I use daily.
